Pope Francis
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born on December 17th 1936. He is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of the five children of Mario Jose Bergoglio and his wife Regina Maria Sivori. He qualified as a chemical technician before deciding to become a priest. At the age of 21 he joined the Jesuit Order and was ordained in 1969. Having taught in Jesuit colleges be became provincial of the Order in Argentina from 1973 to 1979. He was named auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992 and succeeded Cardinal Quarracino in 1998. He was created cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001. He is a man of great humility.
He has lived in Buenos Aires in a small apartment, used public transport and cooked for himself. Having been chosen by the Cardinals at the Conclave to be Pope, after five rounds of voting, and being so warmly welcomed on the 13th March in St. Peter’s Square, we join with the world in wishing all God’s blessings on the first Pope from South America and the first Pope to choose the name Francis. His motto is ‘Miserando atque eligendo’ (‘With mercy and favour’).
Community Alert – Text Alert Meeting
A good deal of progress has now taken place in the preparation for the launching of the Text Alert in the parish. We are most grateful to those who have carried the work forward. Now is the time when the real spread of such an important movement must take place. The next meeting, to which everyone is invited and encouraged to come will be on Tuesday night next 19th March in Glengoole Hall at 8.00. Do not leave this alertness to your neighbour, come along yourself.

There was no winner of the € 17,000 Jackpot this week. The numbers drawn were 18, 20, 26 & 30. Lucky Dip winners were Marlenea Webster, Gortnahoe, Shane Corbett, Mellison, Matthew Pollard, Ballysloe, Stephen Purcell, Urard. € 25 Sellers Prize winner was Susan Corbett, Gortnahoe. Next Draw is 21st March in Hogans, Ballysloe. Jackpot will be €17,200.

Gortnahoe Bingo wishes to thanks everyone who supported the Raffle for Trocaire last Saturday night. The proceeds came to €630.00
