Preparing for Marriage
On Monday last 5th November the state introduced new regulations for couples preparing for marriage. This is our advice to you.
- Book the Church and hotel in good time. Catholic marriages take place only in churches
The couple must do the following more than three months before the wedding.
- Bride and groom give notice to a priest of your parish that you intend getting married on the date you have decided. Arrangements can then be made for the groom in his parish and the bride in her parish to complete your marriage papers in good time and both arrange to attend a Pre-Marriage Course.
- Bride and groom must give notice to a Marriage Registrar that you intend getting married and make an appointment for both of you to attend in person at the Registrar’s Office to arrange all civil matters. The couple must be issued with a Marriage Registration Form, filled up by the Registrar. This Form will include names and ages of the couple, the priest doing the ceremony and the names of the bridesmaid and best man. This Form is supplied to the couple and must be in the church on the day of the wedding. It is signed by the couple and the priest at the end of the wedding. The fee for all the civil documentation is € 150.00.
Fr. O’Rourke and Fr. O’Keeffe will gladly give advice to any couple if something is unclear. Our main message is start preparing well over three months in advance of your marriage. This ensures that it will be joyful.
